What Is Melasma and How Does It Develop?
Melasma is a skin pigmentation disorder caused by the overactivity of melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing melanin, the pigment that gives skin its color. When these cells become overstimulated, excess melanin accumulates in the skin, resulting in light brown, dark brown, or grayish-brown patches.
Melasma commonly appears on areas that receive frequent sun exposure, such as the cheeks, forehead, nose, upper lip, and chin.
This condition is especially common among women, individuals with medium to darker skin tones, and those who are regularly exposed to sunlight. Although melasma is not harmful to physical health, it can affect appearance, confidence, and self-esteem.
The development of melasma is influenced by multiple factors, including UV radiation, hormonal changes, genetics, stress, and certain medications or skincare products that stimulate pigment production. These factors may trigger melasma or worsen existing pigmentation.

1. Sunlight, UV Radiation, and Heat
Sun exposure is considered the leading trigger for melasma. Sunlight contains UVA rays, which penetrate deeply into the skin and contribute to skin aging and deeper pigmentation, and UVB rays, which cause sunburn, tanning, and superficial pigmentation.
In addition, heat from cooking, hot environments, and even blue light emitted by computers and smartphones may stimulate melanocytes and increase pigment production.

Types of Melasma

3. Mixed Melasma
Appearance: A combination of both epidermal and dermal melasma. Some areas may have clearly defined brown pigmentation, while others appear grayish and diffuse.
Treatment: Typically requires a combination of topical treatments, skincare, and medical procedures to achieve optimal results.
Melasma vs. Freckles: What's the Difference?
Although melasma and freckles both appear as brown pigmentation on the skin, they differ significantly in their causes and characteristics.
Melasma typically appears as larger brown patches with indistinct borders and often develops symmetrically on both sides of the face, especially on the cheeks, forehead, nose, and upper lip. It is influenced by sunlight, hormones, genetics, and other pigmentation triggers.
Freckles, on the other hand, appear as small, well-defined brown spots scattered across the skin. They are commonly found on sun-exposed areas such as the cheeks and nose. Freckles are primarily influenced by genetics and UV exposure and often become darker after sun exposure while fading during periods of reduced sun exposure.
Some individuals may have both melasma and freckles simultaneously. Therefore, evaluation by a qualified dermatologist is important to ensure accurate diagnosis and appropriate treatment planning.

Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays with SPF 50+ and PA++++ protection. Apply an adequate amount daily, even when staying indoors, as artificial light and digital screens may also contribute to pigmentation.
3. Choose Gentle Skincare Products
Avoid products containing high concentrations of alcohol, fragrance, or harsh exfoliating ingredients. Instead, focus on products that strengthen the skin barrier, provide hydration, and contain antioxidants.
4. Maintain Internal Balance
If melasma worsens after starting hormonal medications such as oral contraceptives, consult your physician regarding alternative options. Managing stress and getting sufficient sleep may also help reduce cortisol levels and support healthier skin.
